What is Gum Disease?
If you’ve got gum disease, you’re not alone – almost 90% of adults in the UK do too. Gingivitis is the most common form of gum disease and the easiest to treat. If left untreated it can develop into the more serious form of the disease known as periodontal disease.
The main symptoms of gum disease are bleeding gums and bad breath (halitosis) – left unchecked, it may also cause pain, abscesses and tooth loss. If you have these symptoms or if you’re worried about your gums, go and see your dentist for a check-up and ask for more information about GumSaver.
How is gum disease caused?
Having gum disease may have come as a surprise to you, especially if you’ve been brushing twice a day. The problem is, gum disease is caused by plaque bacteria irritating your gums, and once bacteria has gone below the gum-line, it’s impossible to remove with a regular toothbrush.
Bacteria combine with food particles and saliva to form plaque. The plaque contains bacteria which cause irritation and swelling under the gum-line. This is called gingivitis, literally “swollen gums.” If you treat gingivitis early, the effects can be reversed. However, if left untreated, it will worsen and periodontal disease will develop. Periodontal disease is far more serious and can cause gum recession, tooth root decay, bite collapse, bad breath and even tooth loss.
You are also at risk if you smoke or suffer from certain conditions, such as diabetes or a weakened immune system. Family history plays a part too, as does your age – the older you are, the more likely you are to suffer from gum disease.
